The Healing Breath is not just another pranayama technique; it is literally a breath that heals. It synchronizes and regulates heart rate – mirroring the therapeutic effects of the Valsalva Maneuver, a breath technique often recommended by medical professionals. I use the Healing Breath during Guided Healing Light Energy Journeys, to propel a meditative vision of healing light to different chakra energy centers and specific areas of the physical body – to heal and alleviate pain.

Understanding the Healing Power of Breath
Breathing, our most vital life force, sustains us yet its true potential often remains untapped. While instinctual diaphragmatic breathing fades into shallow patterns over time, re-learning deep, intentional breathing rejuvenates our cells with pranic energy. This enhanced oxygenation purifies the blood, alleviates stress, increases concentration, and promotes restful sleep, laying the groundwork for restorative healing.
The Mechanism of Healing Breath
The Healing Breath operates on multiple dimensions – energetic, emotional, mental, and subconscious – dissolving ama, the toxic by-product of undigested emotional experiences. This breath stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, inducing relaxation and aligning heart frequency with Earth's magnetic oscillations.
Pranayama: Expanding Life Force Energy
Pranayama, the art of breath control, manipulates prana (breath) to extend and enrich life force energy. This ancient practice stabilizes the mind, enhances heart rate variability, and rebalances the nervous system. Techniques like Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) purify the nadis (inner energy channels) to ensure unobstructed prana flow , creating balance, clarity, and spiritual awakening.

Nadi Shodhana: A Cornerstone of Pranayama
By methodically alternating breath through each nostril, using the thumb and pinky to unify Ida – the feminine, cool, lunar energies – with Pingala – the masculine, warm, solar energies – Nadi Shodhana directly balances these two forces within us. At the same time, it clears the Sushumna, the central energy channel running along the spine, through which Kundalini Shakti (primal energy) ascends, leading to higher states of consciousness.
By regulating the flow of breath, and focusing intention on the movement of energy, Nadi Shodhana amplifies the flow of prana throughout the body – supporting the healing and rejuvenation of the physical and subtle bodies. This enhanced pranic flow strengthens the immune system, boosts vitality, and supports the body's natural healing mechanisms.
Breathing Techniques: A Natural Healing Gift
Before the advent of modern anxiety medications, Co2 breath clinics of the 1940s demonstrated the natural power of pranayama to heal anxiety – underscoring the body's inherent capacity for self-healing as a gift accessible to all.
Healing Breath is the Vital Force behind Guided Healing Light Energy Journeys
We typically begin each Healing Light Energy Journey by bathing the energy system and cells with life force prana during 30 seconds of the "Fast Breath" – a fast, or panting, breath through the nostrils. During the short rest between the Fast Breath and Healing Breath process, clients report feeling a warm tingling sensation. Some even see faint visons in their mind's eye!

Next, the warming energy of the Healing Breath softens, loosens and removes energetic vibrations of unprocessed emotions, old programs and patterns that are stuck in the meridians, nadis and chakras (inner energy centers) – causing emotional disturbances and mental blockages. The technique incorporates Kumbhaka (retention breath) and Ujjayi (ocean-sounding breath) to infuse cells with oxygen and light, promoting deep healing across koshic planes – all the layers that make up you.
The Practice of Healing Breath
Ujjayi Breath: Known as "Ocean Breath," due to its soft, whispering exhalation, mimicking ocean waves. Serves as the culmination of the Healing Breath.
Kumbhaka Retention: Holding the breath amplifies its healing power, creating space for light and energy to permeate the cells; enhancing vitality and facilitating a profound transformation.
Implementing all the components of the Healing Breath:
Begin with a focus on expanding the abdomen during inhalation, filling the chest last.
Hold the breath momentarily, engaging in Kumbhaka to saturate the body with light.
Exhale slowly through a nearly closed throat, maintaining abdominal pressure, or a sense of belly fullness. (Think Buddha Belly!) Maintaining a full belly while exhaling may feel counter-intuitive at first, and therefore takes practice.
Visualize the breath expanding the sacral or second chakra (lower back and belly), then ascending from this point during exhalation to direct healing energy to different chakras or specific areas of the body.

Directing Healing Breath for Targeted Healing
Guided visualization amplifies the Healing Breath's impact, channeling prana to heal and rejuvenate specific body parts. This process of energy absorption occurs spontaneously with each inhale of the Healing Breath. To effectively ground this elevated vibrational energy within the physical body, especially after implementing the Fast Breath, we focus our intention and visualization on the healing breath's journey down the Sushumna channel – directing it towards the first three chakras, which are pivotal centers of our innate power. These lower chakras are intrinsically linked to the body's physical healing processes, underscoring the deep interrelation between physical health issues and emotional well-being.
Guided visualization significantly enhances the potency of the Healing Breath, steering prana – or life force energy – to target and revitalize specific areas of the body in need of healing. The intentional focus on the breath activates all seven chakras, with the understanding that lower chakras are crucial to physical restoration. This practice sheds light on the complex interplay between physical disorders and emotional disturbances, illustrating how the directed Healing Breath, coupled with visualization, serves as a powerful tool for healing the underlying causes of physical ailments through the harmonization of our energy centers.
